Cebu’s airport needs to expand…

I am one with Tourism Secretary Ace Durano’s call for the immediate expansion of the Mactan Cebu International Airport. With the number of tourists, both international and domestic, increasing each year, the airport must be expanded to accomodate the traffic.

Durano said it usually takes at least three years for an airport expansion to take effect. Last year 70 percent of the capacity of the airport has been reached and the number of tourists has grown by 14 percent in the first semester of this year. That means the airport will be filled to capacity early next year. That means a crowded waiting lounge, a long queu at the x-ray inspection area, and rubbing elbows with other passengers.

Durano made a clear point when he said that authorities should not wait for the airport to be crowded before the expansion is started. As early as now, the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority board must have already approved a long term expansion plan and the construction should have been started already.

Let’s just cross our finger and hope that the airport remains spacious for tourists. I am in the belief that a crowded airport surely will discourage tourists from coming back.
